Our second day started later than we anticipated, but thanks to the generosity of the owners of Lefty's we started out well fed and ready to tackle the next 40 miles. Not much eventful happened - we went through our first real lumbermill town, Shelton, and our first big hill climb out of the town. The route book wasn't very clear, but Sander and I followed the recommendation to take Hwy 12, a four lane divided highway, all the way to Montessano. The shoulder was wide and few rocks or junk on the way, but the bridges had no shoulders for bikes and of course you always have to look out when crossing an exit ramp.
We passed the abandoned Satsop Nuclear Power Plant (never completed) and you can see the giant cooling towers from the highway. We also passed the second or third of about four outdoor movie theaters still operating. By the time we got to Montessano, Sander was beat and we decided to eat dinner at Gepatto's Italian diner and bike up to Lake Sylvia State Park and call it a night. Our first night in a real campground!

Thanks for posting pictures of the bike and trailer. (75?) miles is a long day- but when you're touring by yourself you tend to cover more ground- less time eating, packing, etc. Bike save and stretch that knee! Much love,

Thanks Jed! Finally found your comment just now. I did cover more ground on my own, and did lots of stretching. Thank God my knees held up! I just found out that Karli, who I traveled with for 1.5 days, had bad enough knee probs that she opted to rent a car and drive home. Poor girl!
